If you’re as sick and tired as I am of hearing about Tiger Beat heartthrob Justin Bieber, then you’ll be just as elated as I am that he got the royal shaft at the Grammies. And especially since he was kicked aside by a jazz artist, and one from my base city of 30+ years, Portland, Oregon as well.
Her name is Esperanza Spalding, age 26, and she’s noteworthy in several ways. First off, she not a big young lady, but she plays one of the biggest instruments there is which you can both carry and play while holding it (thus eliminating pianos, harps, and full concert organs). She plays the standup bass while she sings. She also plays electric bass. Oh, and did I mention that she sings like an angel?
She is also the first jazz artist ever to win the Best New Artist category. Check her out:
You may also note that she is not just slightly gorgeous. She’s fashion model gorgeous and I just love her afro, don’t you?
So, go eff yourself Justin: compared to Esperanza, you’re nothing.
